Description:
This procedure outlines how to remove a damaged clip from a J1772 plug, and replace it. The images within this SOP details the rubberized overmolded plug manufactured by a company called “General Cable”. When ordering from the Service or Operations team, ensure that the plug type in the photos is the same type as that being serviced in the field. If not, a different part number is used - clips/latches are not interchangeable between manufacturers.
Step 1: Remove the clip/latch pin
Remove the retaining pin from the plug which holds the clip/latch in place. This can be achieved by inserting a punch, or a screwdriver into the hole where the metal pin is, and using a hammer to push it through the body of the plug.
Image above shows the pin partially out. continue to drive the pin through.
Image above shows the pin 90% out.
Step 2: Insert the clip
Image above shows the plug ready to accept the replacement latch/clip assembly, which includes the spring on the bottom of the latch/clip.
Image above shows the pin ready to be pushed back into the plug, through the latch/clip to hold it in place. Either a hammer can be used, or pliers of an appropriate size.
Image above shows the pin fully seated back into the plug.
