It can be frustrating when a DC fast charging plug won’t disconnect from your vehicle. This usually happens because of the built-in locking mechanisms designed to keep charging safe. Below are the most common reasons plugs get stuck, and the steps you can take to safely release them.
Why a DCFC Plug May Get Stuck
Locking mechanism: The charging plug has a latch that the vehicle locks in place while charging. The vehicle will not release the latch until charging has fully stopped.
Communication errors: If the charger or vehicle does not complete the “handshake” properly, the latch lock may not disengage.
Physical conditions: Dirt, ice, or worn hardware can cause the latch to stick. In cold weather, parts may contract and tighten.
Timing: Pulling on the connector before it has unlocked can wedge it more tightly.
How to Release a Stuck Plug
-
End the session at the charger
Stop charging on the charger’s screen, app, or RFID card.
Wait for the charger and your vehicle to confirm that charging has ended.
-
Wait for the vehicle to unlock
Most vehicles signal to the driver when the plug is released (a click sound, unlocked light, or screen message).
-
Try vehicle controls
Lock and unlock your doors to reset the port actuator.
Some EVs provide a release option on the infotainment screen.
-
Use the emergency release
EVs have a manual release cord near the charge port (often in the trunk, behind a panel, or under a flap).
Pulling this cord will mechanically disengage the latch. Refer to your owner’s manual for the exact location.
-
Charger reset (if available)
If steps above do not work, restarting the charger may help. If you are at a public station, contact the network operator for assistance.
Important Safety Notes
Do not force the connector. Pulling hard can damage both the plug and the vehicle inlet.
If the connector still won’t release after following the steps above, please contact ZEF Energy Support at support.zefenergy.com or call the number listed on the charging station.
✅ Following these steps should resolve most stuck plug issues and keep your charging session safe.
